For my individual project, I want to express something that is close to myself and my family in a dark yet beautiful way. I want to capture the loss and different stages of emotion and state of someone who is suffering or someone who’s loved one is suffering from dementia. Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behaviour. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. My great grandfather had this disease and my family and I witnessed as he slowly began to lose his memories and himself. My grandmother suffered from memory loss also. I want to use this project as a self-release of emotion and hopefully capture the disease well. Alzheimer’s affects families all over the world and can have a great impact on mental health and lead on to depression amongst other, I wanted also capture elements of this in my photographs.
I will use long exposures so the images the photographs look busy and are blurred, representing the loss of memory and confusion. I will also use coloured gels on some photographs to create an emotive atmosphere. Colours are able to tell a story themselves and I believe they may help with the emotions of anger by using green, and the emotions of heartache and loss by using blue.
I found Maciek Jasik’s work captivating with the use of colour and blur, this is what influenced me to use them both on my images. I found that they were confusing, beautiful and emotive all at the same time, I figured that this would help with the idea of my work greatly.
